The Old Mill Has Been Grinding Since 1830

175 Old Mill Avenue, Pigeon Forge — right next to Gatlinburg, and yes, Pigeon Forge is exactly as tacky as you've heard. But there's a working gristmill here that's been running on water power from the Little Pigeon River since Andrew Jackson was president. In a region where everything competes for attention with bigger signs, the Old Mill just sits on the riverbank doing what it's always done.

Inside, the machinery is visible and active. Stones grinding, grain feeding down, flour coming out warm and fragrant in a way grocery store flour never manages. Buy the cornmeal and pancake mix in the general store. The first pancake you make from it will ruin you for anything from a box. Not an exaggeration.

The river beside the mill is shallow and clear — trout holding position in the current, a wooden footbridge crossing over. The millstones are imported French buhr stones, same design European millers used for centuries. The miller will tell you about them with genuine pride if you ask. Most visitors don't bother, which is their loss.
